Meet the Chaplain

The Rev’d Nancy G. Eswein

Nancy is a Bay Area native and a cradle Episcopalian. She studied Landscape Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley and had a landscape design business for twelve years. A life-changing accident in 1990 was a catalyst for her attending both the School for Deacons and the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. Prior becoming the Chaplain at EMCH, she was Associate Professor of Field Education at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. Nancy has also served as Chaplain at the Episcopal Sanctuary and the Executive Director of Sojourn Chaplaincy at San Francisco General Hospital. She also served on Bishop William Swing’s staff at the Diocese of California and at Church of the Advent of Christ the King in San Francisco, and at Holy Innocents’ (SF).

Nancy has a wide range of interests including gardening, bird watching, renaissance and baroque music, and good wine. She lives in Emeryville with her wife, the Rev'd Angela Guida and two rescue Italian Greyhounds, Romeo and Juliet.

She has spoken locally and nationally on a wide variety of topics, including:

  • Social Outreach/Gospel/Sacramental life of the church               
  • Christian Social Ethics in everyday life               
  • Poverty, Mental Illness and Faith               
  • Spiritual Practice and Social Outreach
